Too
many of today's youth and young adults lack
the education and job skills needed to become
productive members of the workforce. These
young people are often forgotten by society;
their lives are stories of tragedy, failure
and hopelessness about the future.
For
the last twenty-four years the Sacramento
Regional Conservation Corps (SRCC) has been
working
to address the needs of these young people.
More than four thousand young adults have
been served by these programs.
Founded
in 1984 by the Sacramento Metropolitan Chamber
of Commerce, the SLCC has two goals: to provide
education, job skills, and paid employment
to at-risk young adults, and to supply essential
urban conservation and environmental work
for the community.
The
young men and women who join the SRCC reflect
the diversity of our community; 73% are male,
27% are female. Fifty percent are African-American,
with the rest divided between Hispanic, Asian
and Caucasian. Their need for support transcends
their personal and ethnic histories.
As
one corpsmember stated, "I never
thought that I would amount to anything.
Loser
seemed to be the best I could hope for.
Thanks to the SRCC, my life has changed
in a very positive way." |
